A new behind-the-scenes video highlights the filming of season three of the Book of Mormon videos, from King Benjamin to Alma the Younger.
Hundreds of actors, thousands of extras, set builds, and multiple locations went into filming the series, producer Jaelan Petrie says.
Ben Lomu, who plays the part of King Lamoni, spoke of how the purpose of the videos is to bring people to Christ through the Book of Mormon.
“This project is inspired, and this is part of the fulfillment that the Book of Mormon will flood the earth. I really believe that,” he says. “We’re trying to [bring] souls to Christ through the Book of Mormon, and this is just another way of doing it.”
The hours for filming the Book of Mormon videos start early—makeup artists have arrived as early as 3:30 a.m. to get hundreds of actors dressed in costume with hair and makeup done before the crew comes in.
“We have different tribes, different cities, different cultures, and all of that’s reflected in the hair, in the personal grooming, and even makeup—some tribal markings,” says makeup assistant Tara Starling.
Jeff Dickamore, who plays Alma the Younger, also shared his perspective on what it’s like representing an ancient American prophet.
“It’s been pretty intimidating to try to portray such an iconic, heroic prophet of the Book of Mormon, but to get [the] opportunity to use his words and be in an environment that could be similar to what he experienced and the life that he lived, I’ve absolutely loved it—it’s been an amazing experience.”
The purpose of these videos, adds manager of seminaries and institutes Justin Lether, is also to help people become more like the Savior.
“Our hope is that people will be moved to change,” he says. “They’ll grow closer to Jesus Christ through these stories. And to become more like him, which is the purpose of the Book of Mormon, to be gathered unto Christ. All things in one.”
