Episode 39

The theme for Sunday on Monday all year has been to anticipate Jesus. We look forward to His Second Coming the way the Nephites were looking forward to His arrival, and we have finally reached those chapters. 3 Nephi 8–11 has been written about and studied for generations, but today, we are giving special attention to how these chapters have been expressed in art—musically and visually.

Segment 1

Scriptures:
3 Nephi 11:8-10 (Christ came to the Americas)

Words of the General Authorities:
The Answer Is Always Jesus Christ. I also invite you to study again the account of the Savior’s appearance to the Nephites in the Americas, as recorded in 3 Nephi. (Russell M. Nelson, “The Answer Is Always Jesus Christ”, April 2023 General Conference)

Segment 2

Scriptures:
3 Nephi 11:15-16 (The multitude witnessed)
Isaiah 49:16 (Graven on the palms of His hands)
Hebrews 12:1 (Cloud of witnesses)

Words of the General Authorities:
I am the most newly called of the special witnesses. No one else in the world has more recently experienced the sacred happenings of coming to this sacred calling than I…Each has to receive his own witness concerning Jesus as the Christ. I wish this morning to set my seal upon this knowledge.

I now wish to set my seal and testimony upon these events, and upon the divine calling of Jesus as our Lord, Savior, and Redeemer, in my capacity as the newest special witness. (James E. Faust, “A Testimony of Christ”, BYU Speeches 13 March 1979)

I pray that our Savior will heal our souls, dry our tears, and create in each of us a pure heart. I also pray that we may find shelter in the shadows of His outstretched arms and that He will be merciful and forgiving concerning our weaknesses. That He will be a father to the fatherless, and deliver to the needy according to their needs, and incline His ear to our cries. In conclusion, I wish to make a humble declaration and affirmation that Jesus is the Christ. (James E. Faust, “The Supernal Gift of the Atonement”, October 1988 General Conference)

Art:

Segment 3

Scriptures:
3 Nephi 11:15 (The multitude went up one by one)

Words of the General Authorities:
Why do we not have more inspired and inspiring music in the Church? Or why do we have so few great paintings or sculptures depicting the Restoration?...The work of the Lord has been moved by the members in the wards and stakes and branches who have been blessed with special gifts and who use them unselfishly. (Boyd K. Packer, “The Arts and the Spirit of the Lord”, BYU Speeches 1 February 1976)

Segment 4

Scriptures:
3 Nephi 11:2 (The people talking of Christ)
3 Nephi 11:7-8 (Christ descends)

Words of the General Authorities:
Those who find a way to truly behold the Man find the doorway to life’s greatest joys and the balm to life’s most demanding despairs. So, when you are encompassed by sorrows and grief, behold the Man. When you feel lost or forgotten, behold the Man. When you are despairing, deserted, doubting, damaged, or defeated, behold the Man. (Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Behold the Man!”, April 2018 General Conference)

Segment 5

Scriptures:
Acts 4:12 (No other name but Christ)

Words of the General Authorities:
Make a conscious effort each week to prepare for the sacrament by taking some time to prayerfully consider where we most need to improve. We could then bring a sacrifice of at least one thing that keeps us from being like Jesus Christ to the sacrament altar, pleading in faith for help, asking for necessary spiritual gifts, and covenanting to improve during the coming week. (Brian K. Ashton, “The Doctrine of Christ”, October 2016 General Conference)

Art:
Through His Name by Hilary Weeks

Segment 6

Scriptures:
Hebrews 12:2 (Christ is the author and finisher of our faith)
