The San Pedro Sula Honduras Temple was announced in April 2019 by Church President Russell M. Nelson. The new temple will be the second in Honduras; the other is the Tegucigalpa Honduras Temple, dedicated in 2013. Other temples in Central America include the San José Costa Rica, San Salvador El Salvador, Guatemala City Guatemala, Quetzaltenango Guatemala, Cobán Guatemala (announced), Managua Nicaragua (announced) and Panama City Panama Temples.
The number of Latter-day Saints in Honduras has increased. In 1980, Church membership in Honduras was 6,300. Today, there are more than 180,000 Latter-day Saints in the country.
Each temple is considered a “house of the Lord,” where Jesus Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to follow Jesus Christ and serve their fellow man.
Temples differ from meetinghouses or chapels. Unlike meetinghouses, where Sabbath worship and weekly activities take place, temples are open throughout the week and are closed on Sundays.
