Pres. Freeman’s favorite way to take notes during general conference

General conference is fast approaching, and many of us are reflecting on how to best prepare and learn from the Lord this weekend.

On Instagram, Young Women General President Emily Belle Freeman recently shared one of her favorite tips for taking notes during general conference—using colored stickers.

To get ready, she likes to get a new package of stickers and then assign topics or questions on her mind to specific colors. “As I listen to conference, I write down any promptings that come in those areas or any quotes I hear, and then I put a sticker next to each quote or prompting,” she explains.

“My journal is filled with color by the time the last session is over. At the end of conference I will go back and read by category. The promptings that come, combined with the quotes I capture, become a powerful personal study.”

President Freeman credits her mother for teaching her to record her thoughts and impressions during conference, noting that Elder David A. Bednar’s suggestions have helped her refine this process.

Like President Freeman, Elder Bednar uses a topical approach. He reflects on conference messages using a three-part pattern.

“For me personally, my study has focused on the doctrines and principles, the invitations to act, and the promised blessings taught in the messages,” he shared in an Instagram post several years ago.

Regardless of which conference note-taking or study approach works for you, recording promptings can help you remember spiritual insights and show the Lord you’re open to receiving His guidance. As President Russell M. Nelson has taught:

“Pray in the name of Jesus Christ about your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses—yes, the very longings of your heart. And then listen! Write the thoughts that come to your mind. Record your feelings and follow through with actions that you are prompted to take. As you repeat this process day after day, month after month, year after year, you will ‘grow into the principle of revelation.’”
