Archbishop Charles Chaput has been a champion of Mormon and Catholic relations. He developed a friendship with Elder Dallin H. Oaks while speaking out about the need to protect religious freedom alongside the apostle.

"We need to support each other in the work for religious freedom we share,” he said while speaking at BYU. “I believe the friendship of the LDS and Catholic communities is important. We need to treat each other as friends, not enemies or strangers. We need to learn from each other’s successes and mistakes.”

At the World Meeting of Families,he continued the praise, saying, "When we planned this, we tried to reach out to different faith communities to get some help on how to be good families, and I don't think anybody does it better than the Mormon community and the Latter-day Saints. We have a lot to learn from you, and I'm grateful you're willing to help teach us."

Recently, he had a chance to learn more about the focus of LDS beliefs on the family when he led a group of priests, bishops, and others from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia on a tour of the new LDS temple in Pennsylvania. Elder Quentin L. Cook led the tour, explaining to the Catholic religious leaders LDS beliefs in temples and the importance of eternal families.
