WHAT'S A WRINKLE IN TIME ABOUT?
Based on the beloved novel by Madeleine L'Engle, A Wrinkle in Time tells the story of Meg (Storm Reid) and her brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe) as they search through time and space to find their missing father (Chris Pine).
IS IT ANY GOOD? (GRADE: D)
Fans of the book will probably be disappointed. There are a lot of changes from the page to the screen. In fact, some characters and plot points are removed completely. Those who haven't read the novel will probably just be confused—this film is pretty trippy.
The visual effects are impressive. However, without any real purpose or heart behind them, they end up being little more than a beautiful screensaver. Additionally, the film's reliance on close-ups is somewhat distracting and gives the movie a claustrophobic feel. The performances are also lacking. Reese Witherspoon is entertaining enough, but the rest of the cast is hit and miss, depending on the scene and what they are required to do.
IS IT OKAY FOR YOUR KIDS?
A Wrinkle in Time is rated PG for thematic action and peril. While there is no blood and the violence is minimal, there are some nightmare-inducing moments and surrealism that could disturb young children.
ANY WORTHWHILE MESSAGES?
One of the main themes of this movie is that light can overcome darkness. In the film, Meg, Charles Wallace and Calvin are recruited to fight against the dark. This echoes the words of Isaiah 60:1-3, "Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising."
