· 1 (3-ounce) orange Jell-O mix
· 1 tablespoon cornstarch
· ¼ cup rice vinegar
· ¼ cup water
· ½ tablespoon soy sauce
· 1 tablespoon sambal oelek (chili paste similar to chili-garlic paste)
· Red pepper flakes (to taste)
· ½ teaspoon garlic powder
· 2 to 2½ pounds chicken wings
If using whole wings, cut tips off with a sharp knife or kitchen scissors; then cut wings in half at joint. Place wings on cookie sheet sprayed with cooking spray or lined with parchment paper. Cook frozen wings for 50–60 minutes or fresh wings for 30–35 minutes at 375° F, turning halfway through. While wings are cooking, whisk together Jell-O and cornstarch in a small saucepan. Add remaining ingredients and whisk over medium high heat until mixture comes to a boil. Reduce heat and continue to stir until thickened, about 2 minutes. Pour mixture over cooked wings and stir until coated. Note: During our taste-testing competition, this recipe was made with boneless skinless chicken breast chunks (for sampling purposes) and chile-garlic paste.
