In 1847, a teenage Green Flake, as an enslaved person, was sent to trek 1,500 miles across the Western frontier to prepare a path for the pioneer trek of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Green Flake helped pave the way for over 70,000+ to follow—the largest pioneer migration in American history.
Shortly after the establishment of Utah Territory, a law was passed that allowed continued enslavement of those of African descent. This was followed by 10 years of slavery and more than 100 years of men of African descent not holding the priesthood. Despite seemingly insurmountable odds, Black men and women who had been torn from their families for generations found the faith to be baptized with the promise that they would be reunited with their families. They died never seeing the fulfillment of that promise.
However, their legacy lives on. Now, through this new film from Mauli Junior Bonner, their stories will be known and their names will be celebrated as a modern audience recognizes these Saints’ faithful contributions.
And now, you can help create a monument for Green Flake and all of the previously unrecognized African American Saints who made foundational contributions to the early Church. By raising awareness of Green Flake and other important contributors to this sacred history, members of the Church can come together to celebrate those forgotten heroes. Here's how you can participate:
