Temple groundbreakings announced for Utah, New Mexico, and West Africa

The Church recently announced that three temple groundbreakings will be held in the coming months. Read below for more details on new temples coming to Freetown, Sierra Leone; Farmington, New Mexico; and Lindon, Utah.

Freetown Sierra Leone Temple

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Freetown Sierra Leone Temple will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2022. Attendance at the groundbreaking site will be by invitation only. A map of the new temple location can be seen below:

Once completed, the grounds will house a 18,000 square foot single-story temple and an adjacent two-story building that will include an arrival center, patron housing, presidency apartments, ordinance worker apartments, and utility buildings.

As covered by Newsroom, this will be the eighteenth temple in Africa. Temples in operation include the Accra Ghana, Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo, Aba Nigeria, Durban South Africa and Johannesburg South Africa Temples. Three other temples in Abidjan Ivory Coast, Nairobi Kenya, and Harare Zimbabwe are currently under construction, and nine more temples have been announced in Africa—the Antananarivo Madagascar, Beira Mozambique, Cape Town South Africa, Monrovia Liberia, Kumasi Ghana, Lagos Nigeria, Benin City Nigeria, Lubumbashi Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Kananga Democratic Republic of the Congo Temples.


Farmington New Mexico Temple

Ground will be broken for the Farmington New Mexico Temple on Saturday, April 30. Attendance on site at the groundbreaking ceremony will be by invitation only.

According to Newsroom, New Mexico is home to nearly 70,000 Latter-day Saints, and the new temple in Farmington will be New Mexico’s second temple after the Albuquerque New Mexico Temple. The new temple will be a single-story 25,000-square-foot structure and also include a meetinghouse on the grounds. Below you’ll find a map of where the new temple will be located.

Lindon Utah Temple

The Lindon Utah Temple groundbreaking will be held on Saturday, April 23. Attendance on site at the groundbreaking ceremony will be by invitation only. You can see a map of the new temple site below:

The Lindon Utah Temple will be a three-story structure roughly 81,000 square feet in size. Additionally, Utah has 28 temples currently announced, under construction, under renovation, or in operation. Temples have been announced or are under construction in Ephraim, Heber Valley, Layton, Orem, St. George (Red Cliffs), Saratoga Springs, Smithfield, Syracuse, Taylorsville and Tooele (Deseret Peak).
