The most important resource you can have as you leave on your mission is a solid foundation in the scriptures. Make sure you know your stuff. And if you know what mission you've been called to, you could even try to get a head start on studying the language by looking at the scriptures in your mission language.

Jesus the Christ by James E. Talmage
Considered one of the all-time great classics of LDS literature, Jesus the Christ is a comprehensive look into the life and ministry of the Savior. Written at the request of the First Presidency by the Apostle James E. Talmage, and penned from an office inside the Salt Lake Temple, this volume is more than a simple outline of the Savior’s life. It presents a far-reaching view of the Savior — including His life in the flesh, His antemortal existence, and His activities across time as the world’s Redeemer. The Power of Everyday Missionaries: The What and How of Sharing the Gospel by Clayton M. Christensen
"Uncomfortable." "Intimidating." That's how many people describe member missionary work. Clayton Christensen admits that he and his wife, Christine, felt that way in the past too. But they also recognized the tremendous blessings associated with the work, and they wanted to learn how to share the gospel in ways that would be natural and rewarding. Clayton's expertise as an innovator kicked in, and he set out with friends and family members to find a more effective approach to member missionary work. Their refreshing perspectives are presented in this book, which includes inspiring, unusual stories that demonstrate the effectiveness of the ideas.
The Miracle of Forgiveness by Spencer W. Kimball
President Spencer W. Kimball gives a penetrating explanation of repentance and forgiveness and clarifies their implications for Church members. His in-depth approach shows that the need for forgiveness is universal; portrays the various facets of repentance; and emphasizes some of the more serous errors, particularly sexual ones, which afflict both modern society and Church members. Most important, he illuminates his message with the brightness of hope that even those who have gone grievously astray may find the way back to peace and security.
