Latter-day Saint Life

The most moving rendition of ‘I Need Thee Every Hour’ we’ve ever heard

Latter-day Saint singer Emma Nissen is no stranger to singing about the Savior in a powerful and unique, jazzy way.

And this time, she has lent her incredible vocal talent to the poignant hymn “I Need Thee Every Hour.”

The video opens with Emma’s deep voice slowly and passionately singing the first few lines of the hymn while playing the piano inside a church. Then, as she sings the first chorus and verses, other somber individuals start entering the church, and the video highlights the back stories of why they, too, “need Him every hour”—a young father whose wife has passed away, a professional woman experiencing a panic attack in the middle of a work presentation, and a young woman who has received a life-altering medical diagnosis.

The video ends with Emma herself entering the church and joining the congregation in the pews.

A comment shared on YouTube perfectly sums up the power and feeling behind the video: “Just what I needed to hear today. Praying for comfort and healing to all who need it. God is there for you, every hour of every day, and will never abandon you️.”

If you find yourself experiencing similar challenges—loss, grief, anxiety, fear—here are three quotes from Church leaders we love that may help you feel the Savior’s love this week.

For Anyone Experiencing Grief and Loss

“Irrespective of age, we mourn for those loved and lost. Mourning is one of the deepest expressions of pure love. It is a natural response in complete accord with divine commandment: ‘Thou shalt live together in love, insomuch that thou shalt weep for the loss of them that die’ (Doctrine and Covenants 42:45).

“Moreover, we can’t fully appreciate joyful reunions later without tearful separations now. The only way to take sorrow out of death is to take love out of life.” —President Russell M. Nelson

For Anyone Facing Fears and Anxiety

“As we continually strive to overcome our challenges, God will bless us with the gifts of faith to be healed and of the working of miracles. He will do for us what we are not capable of doing for ourselves.” —Elder Ulisses Soares

For Anyone in the Midst of Medical Challenges

“I testify of angels, both the heavenly and the mortal kind. In doing so I am testifying that God never leaves us alone, never leaves us unaided in the challenges that we face. … Always there are those angels who come and go all around us, seen and unseen, known and unknown, mortal and immortal.” —President Jeffrey R. Holland
