Missionary work has undergone significant changes since the COVID-19 pandemic.
As chairman of the Church’s Missionary Executive Council, Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles recently talked about these changes with Church News, sharing how the coronavirus has expanded the way Church leaders think about bringing the gospel to others.
“COVID-19 accelerated our thinking about this tremendously and opened our eyes for new ways" to share the gospel, including via technology, Elder Uchtdorf said. “The Spirit can work wonderfully as we use new and unfamiliar ways of communicating with each other.”
Elder Uchtdorf added that throughout Church history, many have had to return home early due to health concerns, war, accidents, or other unique circumstances. For those missionaries who are going through a similar transition, he said there are two important things to remember.
“The key points are the decision to go and the decision to accept,” Elder Uchtdorf told Church News. “You prepared, you accepted the call, and you gave your best. That is what counts. That is what makes all the difference. That is what makes a missionary.”
