Elder Quentin L. Cook just finished his ministry tour in Asia. Addressing a large congregation of Latter-day Saints in South Korea, he spoke about protecting ourselves and our families when we live in very difficult circumstances.

“You can hardly read any news without realizing that there are great difficulties across the earth,” he says.

Elder Cook spoke of when he and his wife, Sister Mary Cook, were surrounded by “enormous contention” while living in the Bay Area of California in the 1960s. The Cooks had a young family at the time and worried over how to protect them. President Harold B. Lee, then president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, came to speak in their area. He told listeners that if they followed three pieces of counsel they could “live anywhere in the world and be safe and righteous.”

  1. Build Zion in your hearts and your homes.
  2. Be an example in the community where you live.
  3. Have your vision on the temple, the ordinances, and the teachings that allow you to go to the temple.

“[President Lee] said, ‘If you follow those three things, you can be safe. You can raise your family,’” Elder Cook remembers. “And I promise you tonight that you can raise your families. You can ... be disciples of Jesus Christ if you do that here in Korea.”
