On Thursday, May 26, 2022, Elder David A. Bednar gave a statement about the school shooting that took place in Uvalde, Texas. The message came at the beginning of Elder Bednar’s address to the National Press Club in Washington, DC.

“We mourn with those who mourn and pray for all those impacted by this senseless act of violence,” Elder Bednar said. “My prayer and my blessing is that we will be guided, comforted, and helped in our important work, and that victims, families, and nations might be granted the peace that surpasses all understanding—the peace that comes from Jesus Christ.”

Elder Bednar also shared the message on his Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Elder Bednar’s remarks were given in front of nearly 100 journalists at the National Press Club and included an overview of the mission and work of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His address also touched on the Church’s involvement in humanitarian aid and welfare, race relations, the LGBTQ community, and the new Washington D.C. Temple. According to Church Newsroom, Elder Bednar is the first to speak to this group since President Gordon B. Hinckley gave an address there in 2000.
