I was raised in a Jewish household in which Judaism played a large role culturally, but a rather small role spiritually. . . . My father was a very secular individual, and his lack of belief in God was rooted in the gas chambers of Auschwitz and multiplied by heartbreak and loss throughout his life. If there was a God in heaven, how could He allow such things to happen?. . . .
