Song

Dare to do right! Dare to be true! You have a work that no other can do; Do it so bravely, so kindly, so well, Angels will hasten the story to tell. (Chorus) Dare, dare, dare to do right; Dare, dare, dare to be true, Dare to be true, dare to be true.

Thought

“Overcoming the world is not one defining moment in a lifetime, but a lifetime of moments that define an eternity.

It can begin as a child learns to pray and reverently sings, “I’m trying to be like Jesus.” It continues as a person studies the life of the Savior in the New Testament and ponders the power of the Savior’s Atonement in the Book of Mormon.

Praying, repenting, following the Savior, and receiving His grace lead us to better understand why we are here and who we are to become.”

(Neil L. Andersen “Overcoming the WorldEnsign or Liahona May 2017)

Scripture

“For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith” (1 John 5:4).

Lesson

You will need sand, a cup, water, a fist-sized rock, and two pie pans.

Just prior to the lesson, dampen sand and press it into the cup. Place the rock in one pie pan. Invert the cup with compressed sand into the other pan. Carefully remove the cup.

Begin by explaining that even a small amount of water can exert pressure and cause items to change. Demonstrate this by pouring water over the molded sand. Point out that some items are stronger and resist the pressure without changing. Pour water over the rock to illustrate.

Compare this to the pressure of the world to change us and our standards. Ask: How can we become strong enough to resist worldly pressures?
