Thought

“Pondering a passage of scripture can be a key to unlock revelation and the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Ghost. Scriptures can calm an agitated soul, giving peace, hope, and a restoration of confidence in one’s ability to overcome the challenges of life. They have potent power to heal emotional challenges when there is faith in the Savior. They can accelerate physical healing.

Scriptures can communicate different meanings at different times in our life, according to our needs. A scripture that we may have read many times can take on nuances of meaning that are refreshing and insightful when we face a new challenge in life.”

Scripture

“And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:15-17).

Lesson

You will need two small pie pans, a rock, a sponge, and one cup of water.

Put the rock in one pan and the sponge in the other. Ask: Which item will soak up more water? Pour half of the water over each item. Note that little or no water is visible in the pan with the sponge, but you can see nearly all the water in the pan with the rock. Ask: Why does one pan have more water than the other?

We are like the rock when we read our scriptures without purpose or focus; the truths of the scriptures run off and cannot fully penetrate our souls. We are like the sponge, however, when we prayerfully study the scriptures; we absorb gospel truths because the Spirit is able to teach us.

Have family members share scriptures that have helped them absorb gospel truths.
