The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints released a series of powerful videos about overcoming pornography, supporting loved ones with a pornography problem, and finding healing from pornography or betrayal trauma. We will be highlighting these valuable resources over the ensuing weeks.
As ChurchofJesusChrist.org/addressing-pornography states:
"President Boyd K. Packer taught that 'the power of procreation is not an incidental part of the plan; it is the plan of happiness; it is the key to happiness' ('The Plan of Happiness,' Ensign or Liahona, May 2015, 26). The home is the ideal place for children to learn about sexuality."
But how do we approach this topic with our children? ChurchofJesusChrist.org has compiled a list of resources to help you teach your kids healthy sexuality, and you might find the articles "Healthy Sexuality and Chastity: 5 Ways to Teach Your Kids (Without Making It Awkward)," "3 Dimensions of Sexual Wholeness Crucial for Teaching Children About Intimacy," "Talking to Your Kids About Sex Using the Temple as Your Guide," and "Why Teaching Morality Isn’t Enough: How to Teach Children Healthy Sexuality" helpful in your discussions.
ChurchofJesusChrist.org/addressing-pornography notes:
"Many parents fear that talking to their children about sexuality will awaken sexual behavior within their children. While this may be true in some cases, it is far better for children to receive information about sexuality from a loving parent than from other sources. When we as parents talk to our children about sexuality, we can prepare them in an accurate and safe way. . . . "It’s OK if we feel unsure about how to best handle these conversations. We can use our vulnerability to build a relationship with our children. . . . Remember that saying something is always better than waiting for the perfect time or perfect way to express ourselves."
Among the important conversations to have with your children is a discussion about pornography. Helping your children understand what pornography is and the effect it can have on them will safeguard them when they come across it in the future.
