Getting married to the love of your life is exciting and wonderful! As you begin to merge your two lives together, you’ll learn, grow, and experience life in a whole new way. During this process, you’ll discover immense joys and many difficulties. Striving to mix your lives together, understanding your differences, and learning to communicate can be hard, but well worth the effort. To help you along this journey, we’ve found several tips from LDS Church leaders that will help strengthen your marriage.
1. Recognize and Appreciate the Value of your Marriage and Each Other
Your marriage is an amazing thing in and of itself! Elder Russell M. Nelson said, “Marriage is both a commandment and an exalting principle of the gospel.” He said, “Marriage is the foundry for social order, the fountain of virtue, and the foundation for eternal exaltation.” Wow! This is what our marriages are destined for, but each of us have to choose to fulfill this potential. When you understand and constantly remember how important your marriage is, it will help increase your desire to enhance it.
Elder Nelson goes on to state that “Marriage is sanctified when it is cherished and honored in holiness. That union is not merely between husband and wife; it embraces a partnership with God.8 ‘Husband and wife have a solemn responsibility to love and care for each other.’9 Children born of that marital union are ‘an heritage of the Lord.’10” You’re doing the Lord’s work as you strive to better your relationship with your spouse and children.
