Each year, as we reflect back on what we did—and didn’t—accomplish, we seem to get this fire to accomplish everything imaginable in the New Year. Lose weight, save money, study the scriptures, write in a journal, see old friends. By February, we’re burnt out and regretting that long list on the fridge. By March, the list gets lost somewhere behind children’s artwork and coupons from the mail. Then the rest of the year passes all too quickly, and we find ourselves starting all over again.

The world around us is full of opportunities. The hard part is choosing the right opportunities for us. How many times do you have to choose between two good things? Will trying them all make you truly happy or which opportunities will get you where you truly should be? On the other hand, we sometimes fear the opportunities and the possibility of failure, which will stop our progress. So how do we balance our thoughts and our desire, so that we can make better choices that can lead us to our true purpose?

And yet, goals are one of the things in life that we need to stay spiritually alive, whether we accomplish all of them or just a few.

It's the end of January, and my son is furiously trying to finish his science fair project at the last minute despite my warnings (pleadings!) weeks early to finish it early “or you’ll be sorry.” The end of term occurred just days before and I had the pleasure of listening to not one, but two teenagers give me passionate speeches ranging from “The teacher must not have entered the grade in right,” to “Don’t worry, I’ve got it covered, and I won’t really learn unless I handle this on my own,” and my personal favorite speech: “Grades don’t really matter because it’s really about the learning process.” (I keep telling my kids that I WAS a jr. high and sr. high teacher. I know their tricks and I know students, and 9 out of 10 times, I’m going to be on the teacher’s side. Sorry.)

We were somewhere in between Barstow, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada, heading back from a long weekend in California. To me this was one of the least appealing parts of the drive, with only a sprawling, desolate brown desert and some random Alien Jerky billboards to look at. We had piled in a car for one of our many road trip adventures and had spent the weekend discussing everything from English literature to politics, fashion to humanitarian aid, and teaching to running biomechanics (I had to throw that topic in!).

That’s one of my favorite quotes from President Hinckley. The example of Peter in this instance really hits me, because I tend to be a victim of “Sunday resolutions,” those bold declarations that are so easy to make and so difficult to live up to.

If there's one word I dislike more than the others, it might be 'resolutions'. Why? Because I make dozens of them every year and find myself looking at a checklist that's only a tenth of the way checked off by next New Year's. It's completely my fault, I know, but it's still super overwhelming to see how many things I've left undone at the end of the year. Again.

I’m a bit of an obsessive list maker. I’m not particularly obsessive about actually using lists, but I love making them. I have running lists of places I want to visit, movies I want to see, books to read, restaurants to try, home improvement projects to tackle, topics I would like to learn more about, etc. I also have about half a dozen Post-it notes stuck around my computer screen at work with assignments needing to be completed and ideas for streamlining and improving implementation of other projects. And of course I have the obligatory list outlining my resolutions for the year.

In ancient Rome, Janus was the god of beginnings. He was often depicted with two faces—one looking back on the past, the other looking forward to the future. Some languages name the month of January after him because the beginning of the year was a time for reflection as well as planning.
