A few weeks ago, members were excited at the announcement that general conference speakers could choose to speak in their native tongue. In the Saturday Morning Session of conference, Elder Chi Hong Wong became thefirst to ever give a general conference talk in a language besides English. The language he spoke in? Cantonese. Those in the conference center who don't speak Cantonese understood the talk by watching the English translation on two jumbo screens behind the choir. Those elsewhere heard a voice-over of the talk in English:
Other native language speakers include Elder Eduardo Gavarret, who spoke Spanish in the Saturday Afternoon Session:
Elder Carlos A. Godoy spoke Portuguese in the Sunday Afternoon Session, and Elder Hugo E. Martinez spoke Spanish in the Sunday Afternoon Session.
We look forward to native languages becoming a familiar part of conference weekend!
