Church Defends Traditional Marriage in Response to Recent Court Ruling

Earlier this year there was a large stir online when a handful of religious organizations, including The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, filed an amicus brief supporting traditional marriage in an ongoing court case attempting to make same-sex marriages legal in Utah.

A Utah Amendment was overturned last December by U.S. District Court Judge Robert Shelby, which meant that same-sex marriage was temporarily allowed until an appeal was made to the U.S. Supreme Court and the ruling was stayed. The case was then handed over to the 10th Circuit Court of appeals, where the amicus brief was submitted.

Today the Deseret News National edition reported that despite the brief, the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the decision to allow same-sex marriage in Utah.

Plans are being made to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court, and the Church issued the following in response: "The Church has been consistent in its support of marriage between a man and a woman and teaches that all people should be treated with respect.  In anticipation that the case will be brought before the U.S. Supreme Court,  it is our hope that the nation’s highest court will uphold traditional marriage."
