MR says: Big news: in a statement released last night, the LDS Church said that it has reviewed the Boy Scout's proposal to begin including gay youth in the program (while still barring openly gay leaders) and plans to continue working with BSA in the future.

For 100 years, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has enjoyed a strong, rewarding relationship with Boy Scouts of America (BSA).

Recently, BSA has been reviewing a possible policy change in its standards for membership and leadership. Now that BSA has finished its review process and has proposed a resolution for consideration, the Church has issued the following statement:

“Over the past several weeks BSA has undertaken the difficult task of reviewing its membership standards policy. In their own words, this undertaking has been 'the most comprehensive listening exercise in its history.'

"While the Church has not launched any campaign either to effect or prevent a policy change we have followed the discussion and are satisfied that BSA has made a thoughtful, good-faith effort to address issues that, as they have said, remain 'among the most complex and challenging issues facing the BSA and society today.'

"The current BSA proposal constructively addresses a number of important issues that have been part of the on-going dialogue including consistent standards for all BSA partners, recognition that Scouting exists to serve and benefit youth rather than Scout leaders, a single standard of moral purity for youth in the program, and a renewed emphasis for Scouts to honor their duty to God.

"We are grateful to BSA for their careful consideration of these issues. We appreciate the positive things contained in this current proposal that will help build and strengthen the moral character and leadership skills of youth as we work together in the future.”

The LDS Church is NOT OK with the BSA proposal. Reread the Church's statement. They did NOT say they were satisfied with the proposal; they said they were satisfied that the BSA had put a good effort into trying to find a workable solution. That's a HUGE difference. You need to correct your headline and the misimpressions this article gives. Speak to someone at Church headquarters who is dealing with this issue to get the real story. The leadership of the Church is clear about the fact that you can't properly paint all people with homosexual feelings with the same brush, calling them all "gay," as this BSA proposal does. There are youth and men with homosexual attractions who are good Latter-day Saints and very appropriate for Scouting, and there are youth and men with homosexual attractions who aren't dedicated to principles of morality who are absolutely not appropriate for Scouting. You have to make judgments based on a person's dedication to principles of morality, not on feelings that come to them. Steve

Complete confidence in the Brethren is my road. Obviously many questions come to mind in the decision but if I have learned in the last 44 years in the LDS Church is that those who have the keys to make decisions cannot be deceived. I choose to stand by those who have the key's. The what if's and issues that many will conjure up in their minds and hearts need to be rest assured that the Presidency knows thru direct inspiration what the correct decision should be. Lets stand behind them as we should in all things. They will not lead us astray. Love your neighbors as the Lord has asked us all to do.

I and my family are waiting for the prophet to deciede just whats going to be. As for me if the church says it's ok to be gay or a homosexual in the church and hold a calling or be a scout leader or anything in the program well me and my family are outta there. I hate noone however I also don't need their lifestyle forced on me. I know from experiance as my son is gay and he knows his dad don't and won't accept his lifestyle . however he knows I love him and always will. I believe what it says in the bible ,,god created Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve. figure it out if in doubt. Husbands and Wives. I have faith that the President of the church will make the right choice based on the word of God. Not based on tiths ond offerings that could increase in the Church like other churches. I base this on facts about the churches who except them for financial gain. So lets leave it to the presidency to chose.

YES....!! The headline is very misleading - However, if you think of how The Church handles membership of "gays" -(....as long as they don't "Act out" their tendencies, as "stevesgu" stated)...they remain in good standing! Now you can begin to "see" how The Church..."Appreciates"..."the positive things" in BSA's proposal. Somehow...we all need to find a way to love "ALL" of God's Children - as He does!! Rich

As I read it, if the Church "looks forward to working together with the BSA in the future", then they have accepted the proposal.

You really need to change this headline! The statement is torturous at best. It is a neutral position as evidenced in, "While the Church has not launched any campaign either to effect or prevent a policy change..."

Ok 77dforand. So maybe you're in denial about the Church's stand on homosexuality. The Church has said that so long as homosexuals don't give in to their sexual urges that its happy to accept gay people who remain chaste. Are you saying that's wrong? Are you saying that the Church discriminates against gays? Would like to give your name and ward and let's see what the Church has to say about it.

77dforand why don't you check out the LDS Church website mormonsandgays.com It explains the position the church takes on homosexuality. Gays are accepted and the same rules apply as to everyone else - no sex outside of marriage.
