June 2011 Sharing Time: The Fourth Article of Faith

Obtain a poster from the library (or create your own) with the words of the fourth Article of Faith. Ask the pianist to be prepared to play the songs you have selected or obtain the Children’s Songbook CDs and a CD player. Cut some large musical notes out of colored paper.
Show the children the poster of the fourth Article of Faith. Have the children repeat it with you. Ask them to identify the four principles or ordinances and write them across the top of the chalkboard.
Explain to the children that they need to listen carefully to some musical clues about the first principles and ordinances of the gospel. Play “name that tune” by having the pianist play the first few notes of a primary song (or play the first few notes on the CD). Have the children raise their hand when they know what song is being played. When the song is correctly identified, have all the children sing it (have the words written on a large sheet of paper if they are not familiar with that song).
After singing the song, ask the children which principle or ordinance they learn about from that song. When they identify the principle or ordinance, place a colored musical note under that heading on the board. Briefly discuss the truths taught in the song.
Include songs such as those listed below or other songs the children in your primary are familiar with.
Faith: “Faith” (Children’s Songbook, 96), “I Pray in Faith” (CS, 14), “Nephi’s Courage” (CS, 120).
Repentance: “Help Me, Dear Father” (CS, 99), “Repentance” (CS, 98).
Baptism: “I Like My Birthdays” (CS, 104), “When I Am Baptized” (CS, 103), “Baptism” (CS, 100).
Holy Ghost: “Listen, Listen” (CS, 107), “Holy Ghost” (CS, 105), “Still Small Voice” (CS, 106).
Bear your testimony of these principles and help the children understand that through following them we can return to live with Heavenly Father again.
