We Shall Remember Them

The church bells began to toll the eleventh hour on a beautiful winter's morning, Sunday, 8 November, in the town of Alloa in the Edinburgh Scotland Stake. Members of the public, local dignitaries, regiments of the armed forces, the local air cadets and veterans of armed conflicts past and present gathered together at the town's cenotaph to pay their respects to those who have fallen in battle to preserve our liberty and freedom. At the conclusion of the two minutes silence and the playing of the national anthem, local dignitaries step forward to the strains of "Oh God our help in ages past," to lay poppy wreaths at the foot of the cenotaph as a mark of respect.

Amongst them was Brother Colin Partington of the Alloa ward, who laid a wreath on behalf of the members of the Alloa ward. For the past five years, Brother Partington has represented the members of the Alloa Ward at the annual Remembrance Day services. To Brother Partington it was an honour and a privilege to be part of the Remembrance Day services, to represent the Church in the local community and to represent his family.

"Every family in the church has been affected by war. As members research their ancestors, they will discover loved ones who have been lost in the fields of battle. It is important that we never forget them, by participating in Remembrance Day services we honour our family members, it is imperative we do so," said Brother Partington.

Brother Partington lost both his grandfathers and great uncles in the First World War, all his uncles served in the Second World War and survived. In the 1950's Brother Partington and his wife Jean served in the armed forces, Sister Partington served in the RAF and Brother Partington in the RAF Police. Recently his grandson served with the Argyll's and completed two tours of Afghanistan.

Brother Partington is touched that he had been asked to represent the ward at the local communities Remembrance Day service. "It is privilege to represent the Church and to be part of the community gathered together to honour the men and women of our nation who have fallen in maintaining our liberty and freedom that we enjoy. I would love to see all the wards and branches throughout the United Kingdom represented at their local Remembrance Day services."

Brother Partington is a former Bishop and currently serves as the High Priest Group Leader of the Alloa Ward.
